The modern Scripps Pier was built in 1988 to replace the original pier built in 1916. It is thought one of the world's largest research piers and collects data on ocean conditions and plankton. The platform on the ocean hold meteorological stations and has facilities for launching research vessels. The pier was named in honor of Ellen Browning Scripps (1836-1932) who was a journalist and philanthropist and the founding donor of the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, as well as donating to organizations worldwide that promised to advance democratic principles and women's education.
